Microsoft Putting an Extra GPU Heatsinks IN!!!

>> =Ikari= sent us these pictures of his Xbox360 he just got back from repair (after RoD problem) ... another confirmation of the new 2nd heatsink/pipe technology we talked about yesterday that Microsoft installs to provide additional cooling for the Xenos GPU. For now it's unknown if Microsoft just installs this new dual-heatsink technology to repaired Xbox360s or also in new units.

Still just a temp fix, they need to use better materials to keep the contacts from coming loose on the GPU, CPU, etc. I'd holf off on getting a 360 if this is the only change MS made, though I guess they attached the corners of the GPU and CPU to the mobo with epoxy or something in the Elites.

I think the fix is to trash the x-clamps and attach the motherboard in a different manner to where when the heat sinks are attached, it provides a consistant centered downward pressure on the die of the chip instead of pulling on the corners.

Google x-clamp replacement to see where I am going with this. If you find the right page, you'll see a fix and a fine fix it is because it actually works.

Do you mean that's the fix proposed here, or that's the real fix?

oh, no, I'm just saying thats what MS should do. The fix they are showing, just adds a little more heat dissipation to it. It might help some because I think the CPU heat sink can handle the extra heat thats coming from the add on heat sink. But I don't think it's a total solution. just my opinion though.

Have you performed that fix at all Sadalius? Would you recommend it only if the RRoD appears or as a premptive measure?

Yes. I've done this fix. Thats how I know it works. I've done it on a few different 360's. In fact, I've ran my local Lowe's out of stock on some of the hardware on the list and they've all worked. But I wouldn't do it until the 3 RLOD appeared. Otherwise, you wouldn't have any idea of whether or not it was torqued down correctly.
