Which model Hitachi? Pre-FK78 drives are very easy mod, you don't even need to boot into dos, you can use a command prompt from within Windows after getting the drive into Mode B with Slax CD/Connectivity Kit to read the original firmware, create the hacked firmware, and flash the hacked firmware. Hitachi FK78 drives have epoxy over the firmware chip. You need to use a combo of Maximus' Firmware Toolbox and the Slax CD to flash them. The process is a bit more involved, but not too bad. For FK79's, you need to solder a passkey addon to get the drive key and read/write to the firmware chip. This contains all the information you need to know for Hitachi drives:

78's aren't to bad. Basically, you want to get the slax CD and the latest version of 360 firmware toolbox by maximus. Here is the way that I do it.

I use a seperate power supply to provide power to the 78 drive. I also use a connectivity kit to convert the molex power connector from the power supply to the 78. This way, when I boot slax and the drive is put into mode b and then reset the computer to boot into windows, the drive isn't re-initialized and put back into standard service mode, some computers doesn't do this so you may not need to have as elaborate of a setup as I do. You could use the 360 itself to power the drive as an alternative. The rest of it is pretty universal.

1. Connect the drive to the computer and boot with your slax cd. You might have to adjust your computers BIOS settings to get it to boot from the CD. At some point slax may say "spinning up drive" and not want to continue. You'll need to eject the drive tray to get it to continue. Once Slax reaches the login prompt, the drive should be in mode b. This can be tested by ejecting the drive. It should take two presses of the eject button to get the tray to stay ejected. One press will eject the tray, but it will close a few seconds later. If you have to press twice to get the tray to stay out, you've got mode b and can proceed. Otherwise, start over.

2. Once in mode b, reset the computer and take out the slax CD. Boot into windows and start firmware toolbox.

3. Click tools->Direct Drive Dump(GDR Only), it will ask you to put a DVD movie or an original 360 game in the drive. Do so. Then click raw dump as button and give it a name like orig.bin. It will then ask you if you want to verify the dump, I would choose yes. Once it's verified, it will ask you if you want to open it, choose yes. When it opens it, pay attention to the box that says Key. Look at the information that it has to make sure that the key looks valid. It should look like a random string of characters and numbers and should not be all of one character or number. If it is all F's or 0's or something to that nature, you'll need to redump the firmware again. Here is an example of a valid key: 8ADBC9AF68084E4B6BA1B63DA902E8D6 This really isn't someones key, but it is what a valid key would look like.

4. Click Tools-> Smart Hack Patcher. On the next box, click the ... button next to output file and name it something like hacked.bin. Make sure that the rule set says iXTREME12_0078+_V1 and choose generate file. This makes your hacked firmware.

5. Click Tools->Direct Drive Flash (GDR Only)->Differential Flash (Patch). Another box will come up. Make sure your 78 drive is selected. Click read and detect differences. In the box that says Flash these sectors, some information will start populating. When it finishes, click start flashing and it should flash your new firmware, or it should flash the differences between the original and the hacked firmware.

6. When it's done, remove the disk from the drive and shut everything down, reconnect it into your 360 and have fun.

You can get Slax from here
360 fw toolbox is on xbins.

Hope this helps get you started on the right path!!
