All of the drives out for 360 currently are able to be flashed. There is iXtreme firmware for all drive models available. You either need a PCI SATA card that is compatible with the 360 DVD-ROM drive, or onboard SATA that is compatible with the 360 optical drive. Either will work. You can check compatible chipsets here:

http://hacks-4-snacks.com/stoner/pub...and%20MORE.pdf

This is along the lines of the PCI SATA you will want to look for: Newegg.com - Rosewill RC-212 PCI SATA / IDE Controller Card SATA 150 + ATA 133 : Supports Raid 0, 1, 0+1 - Retail

Heed the warnings in the guide about OEM PC's, mine would not work for jack, and it cost me a lot of time and aggravation. Typically VIA 6421 is the most compatible PC SATA chipset. Check the SATA compatibility section of the above link, it covers most of the necessary bases. You are most likely to get a Hitachi FK79 drive or BenQ. Either is capable of being flashed. Flashing the BenQ is pretty easy. Flashing the FK79 requires soldering a passkey to the 360 DVD-ROM, making it possible to read and write to the firmware chip. The BenQ can be flashed completely via software. The guide I posted covers all of the above. All the necessary tools for flashing can be found in "the usual places."

Getting the stock case apart is probably the biggest challenge involved in flashing, and it's not that bad. Here are some guides:

Aweirdguy's Xbox Chop Shop

AnandTech: Inside Microsoft's Xbox 360

If you get a 360, get a two year in-store warranty, in case the Red Ring of Death heads your way. Some places check under the faceplate nowadays to see if the warranty sticker is valid. It's best to purchase it at a place you know doesn't check the warranty sticker.

From Textbook's Guide:

Quote:
Compatibility with 360-drives

Samsung MS25

Samsung MS25 drives can be flashed with many SATA chipsets. Silicon Image, Promise, and NForce2 chipsets are known to NOT be compatible for flashing Samsung drives. There are probably more chipsets that are also not compatible. Intel ICH5/6/7/8 chipsets, NForce 3/4 , SiS, Uli, Jmicron, and VIA chipsets are all known to be compatible – others may also be. You cannot flash a Samsung drive using a SATA-to-USB adapter. If you are unsure of whether your SATA is compatible or not, the best advice is to just try it out. If the SATA isn’t compatible, the drive just won’t be recognized. You won’t brick your drive if the SATA is incompatible, it just “won’t work” – so you’re not losing much by just trying out what you already have. If you do not have SATA or yours is incompatible, you should look into purchasing a VIA VT6421 PCI card. Try looking for a local online hardware retailer. Avoid E-Bay, unless their prices are dirt cheap :P

Samsung MS28

Samsung MS28 drives can be flashed using two methods, the VIA bad-flash recovery method and the VCC method (VCC requires soldering). You are best off just forgetting about the VCC method and purchasing a VIA brand card to do the bad-flash recovery method. Even with the VCC method, you would need a chipset compatible with MS25 drives, since the VCC method is the equivalent of temporarily “dropping down” to MS25. It is just easier and safer using a VIA brand SATA chipset. SATA-to-USB adapter are NOT recommended at all for Samsung drives.

Hitachi 46 / 47 / 58 / 59

These “older version” Hitachi drives can be flashed with basically all SATA chipsets. It should work as long as the SATA supports ATAPI devices (optical drives). Another good thing about these drives is they are the only Xbox 360 drives that can be flashed with a SATA-to-USB adapter. The cheap generic ones will work fine. Attempting to flash this drive with a SIL chipset could brick your drive.

Hitachi 78 / 79

These drives can be flashed by most SATA chipsets that support ATAPI devices (optical drives). There are some that will not though. Silicon Image SATA chipsets will not work; they corrupt the data and will give you an error. Attempting to flash this drive with a SIL chipset could brick your drive. Also, in rare cases, there are reports that VIA chipsets have problems with some version 78 drives, but with other version 78 drives they can flash them fine. Many other chipsets should work fine.

BENQ VAD****

These new drives can be flashed with Nforce 4/5 chipset, and also with the VIA 6421 chipsets.
Your SATA chipset:

NVIDIA nForce 430/410 Serial ATA Controller
It looks like your onboard SATA should be compatible with most 360 drives. However, if you have an OEM PC that may not be the case. There is always a chance your onboard SATA may not work for flashing, there are a lot of variables that go into flashing the 360. Based on the information posted in Textbook's guide, it looks your onboard SATA will work, the only way to know for sure is by attempting to flash the drive.

Keep in mind, like LS listed, if the 360 that you get happens to have a Hitachi version 0079, you'll need to order a 79 passkey to be able to flash it.

Yeah I can't directly link you, but type maximus passkey in Google, you'll see what he means. It looks like about 9 wires to solder, so you would need some soldering experience before installing a passkey. The only way to flash the FK79's is through use of the passkey.
