main probs seem to be with what to type once in dos

using iprep and ixtreme 1.4, np there

booting pc to dos bla bla bla, np there

type mtkflash r /m /sata orig.bin (reads orignal firmware)

boot to windows, make loads of copys of firmware :P,

Copy your orig.bin into the appropriate folder
Run the "Make iXtreme firmware" batch file

then copy to usb pen.
reboot to dos

type mtkflash w /m /sata hacked.bin (asuming that will be the name? if not can i just rename?)

Well using the samhack and read method is easier imo. You are doing it manually with mtk flash. The samhack method is fully automated. Some people say doing it manually works better, but the people that I trust who know the 360 use the samhack and samread method.

I've read that using Xtreme bootmaker is safer than iPrep. Either should work fine though. Really all the info you need is in textbook's guides, they more or less cover everything. I recommend just using Xtreme Bootmaker or iPrep for ease of use. The manual method isn't necessary most times. The hacked firmware will automatically be created in dos using those two programs. What you can do before flashing is boot back into Windows and check the firmware that was created with Xtreme Bootmaker or iPrep with Maximus' Firmware Toolbox. Open the bin file containing your firmware and check the drive key. If it is a string of hexadecimal characters, then it's valid. If it's all 0's or F's, then the firmware is invalid and you will need to create the hacked firmware again before flashing with the samhack command.

It's an extra safety precaution, flashing the 360 DVD-ROM with an invalid or corrupt drive key can brick it. So it's a good idea to make sure the drive key is legit. This is also covered in Textbook's guides.

Here is Textbook's guide rewritten by Stoner:

Here is the link to download Textbook's original guide:

The guide rewritten by Stoner has cleaner, easier-to-understand grammar.

Yeah I don't envision you will have any problems, the hardest part is usually getting the 360 drive to show up as Xtreme Pri Master in XBM. That's not difficult, there is a whole section for it in textbook's guide. Read it over before flashing to avoid any aggravation.

Congrats Booboo! That believe it or not is the part most people get stuck on, getting iPrep/XBM to pick up the 360 drive as XTREME PRI MASTER. It's pretty easy really, the best way is to disable all IDE and SATA devices on the mobo in your bios and disconnect the power supply of and all IDE/SATA connections from all other drives in your PC. Then make sure you are using the outer SATA port if you are using PCI SATA. That's really all there is to it. Once that's done, it's cake!

7.29GB isos are splitvid isos. You can disable the splitvid option in Xbox Backup creator under the options tab. If you flashed the BenQ with iXtreme firmware, then leave the splitvid option enabled. If you flashed it with regular Xtreme firmware, then disable it.
