360 Vids

Ok, I went to put a AVI movie into my 360, and got a message saying sign into xbox live, replay the disc and it will download the update to play the video... Do I have to have an active xbox live account? It still signs me in when I boot up, I just can't play any games...

Also, are there any links I can go to, and download games directly to my hard drive? Or do I have to transfer them from a pc to the 360 hard drive?

Please and thank you.

Darlyle.

I believe official 360 support only supports DivX at this time. You have to download the DivX update from XBL. If you use a different HDD in your 360 other than the one which originally downed the update or use your HDD in another 360, then you will have to be connected to XBL every time you want to play DivX files. It might support XviD as well, I'm not 100% on that.

There is no way currently to play 360 games off the HDD. MS has stated this will be included in the Fall 08 update, however the original disc will still have to be in the drive in order to play the game off the 360 Hard Disk.

Hmm, the reason I ask, is my 360 came with demo games on the hdd, and I can play them, or upgrade them to the full game.. Like, I have Lost Planet on my hdd, and can play it without a disk...

Also, the AVI disks I have ar Dvix format, and the hdd is the one that came with the 360... Do I have to have an active XBL account in order to watch the AVI though? Or just an internet connection?

Edit:
One other thing... Can I FTP Music and Videos to my xbox HDD?

All you need is a free sliver accont to download the update just sign up to live, a old gold accont will do.

You can't FTP to your xbox 360. What you can do is put the music to disc and then load on to the xbox HDD.

Ripping Audio CD's to Xbox 360 and Loading Custom Soundtracks

Yeah you can play demos off the HDD, but not full games at this time. That feature is supposed to be unlocked in the fall 08 update. PTU is right, you can't FTP stuff to your 360 HDD, but you can transfer music and videos to the 360 HDD from an external HDD, flash drive, burned CD or DVD, or from a networked Windows PC.

Yes. You have to have an xbox live account to get updates. You need at least a free silver account. Most generally, if you go through the process of creating an account, you'll get a month of gold membership for free. You'll be able to get the divx update that way.

On the games that your playing off your hard drive, those are demo's or are xbox live arcade games. The system is setup so you can download and play demo's and demo's of xbox live arcade games. You can choose to upgrade the xbox live arcade games to their full versions if you want to spend the money on microsoft points and purchasing the upgrade on any xbox live arcade game. But in order to play a game that came on a disk on your 360, you'll need to wait for the fall update. Then you'll be able to install the game from your original to your hard drive. You'll have to have the disk in the drive to play the game too because it checks for the disk to make sure that you own it.

Ah thats ok... About the DivX update... Once I've downloaded it, do I need to be on XBL to play the avi disks? or will it continue to play them once I've got the update

I don't think so, I believe that's only if you try to use the HDD from your 360 on another 360. In that case you have to be logged in to Live to use the DivX feature.
