It Is Possible To Swtich Drives

Is it possible to put a Flashed DVD Drive in a brand new 360 and be able to run backups still?

Yes. You have to dump the firmware key from the new drive and and inject it into the old drive and spoof it as the new drive. Spoofing means that the 360 reads the new drive as the same make and model on the old drive. Doing this successfully depends on what DVD-ROM drive is in the new 360. All DVD-ROM drives available can have the firmware dumped, the Liteons are a bit of a pain. If you get a new 360, you are likely going to get a BenQ or Liteon drive. Here is a guide for spoofing. Robin Hoods Playground • View topic - Spoofing a hitachi into a samsung console

That covers spoofing a Samsung into a Hitachi, you will need to follow the steps relevant to your make and model DVD-ROM drive.

I appreciate your richly informative post.

Can I do this without voiding the warranty?

Nope, just opening the case and "bubbling" the warranty sticker voids the warranty. You can see the warranty sticker under the faceplate. You can heat the sticker up with a hair dryer and use a razor blade to peel it off without tearing or damaging it.

Does doing this void it?

When you rip it off normally, the sticker bubbles, basically the silver on the Microsoft sticker comes away from the clear part of the sticker and it's obvious the sticker has been removed. Technically the second you remove the sticker the warranty is voided, however if you use the hair dryer and razor blade method, the sticker will appear completely stock and no one will know you ever removed it.

Here's a thread with some youtube videos on the subject: Removing warranty sticker without voiding warranty - Xbox 360 Forum

Nope, because it's not possible. If you want to learn about flashing the 360, download and read Textbook's guide: http://www.360mods.net/tutorial/Textbook.pdf

Basically:

1. Find out which model DVD-ROM drive you have:

2. Then buy a PCI SATA card with a VIA 6421 chipset: VIA VT6421A IDE & SATA RAID PCI Controller Card

3. Then dissemble your 360 and follow the flash process for your make and model drive. Textbook's guide covers them all.
