I've done both softmod's and chips. Softmods are cheaper....if you have the right game, it's basically free. Mod chips are getting easier to install. Most you can install without any soldering. From my experience, there is virtually no difference between a chip and a softmod other than with a softmod, you cannot play on Xbox live. Because you can't turn it off. As with a chip, you can turn it off and still get onto Xbox live. If you aren't interested in playing online, a softmod is a very good, cheap way to mod an xbox.

Plus some modchips have the FTP feature, which is nice in case you screwed something up and cannot access your Xbox.
