Microsoft to finance 'Halo' movie

PRESS RELEASE: Microsoft to finance 'Halo' movie

Microsoft Corp. plans to finance a movie based on its popular video game "Halo" after Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox backed out of the project.

The two studios cut their ties to "Halo" because of costs associated with the movie, which had a preliminary budget of $145 million, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The studios also failed to persuade the filmmakers to renegotiate their contracts, the newspaper said.

"We are disappointed that Universal wanted to significantly renegotiate the financial points of the deal," Microsoft said in a statement Friday. "We are already in discussions with potential partners who recognize the value of the 'Halo' brand."

Fox and Universal also had been in a power struggle over the movie's control, the Times said. The studios refused to comment.

The movie -- a large production replete with complicated special effects -- is scheduled for a summer 2008 release.

I wonder why Microsoft didn't get Time Warner to do the movie?? I think they own them don't they? Oh, wait, that would mean they would have to front the costs then wouldn't it?? Which is what they are planning to do now that Universal and Fox backed out. That would just mean more profit for them if the movie did really well. But a very deep hole if it bombed.

I would eat live scorpions off of George Bushs inner thigh blindfolded and handcuffed, and then use Betty Whites elbow as a toothpick to get the hairs out from between my teeth....for 200 million.

Halo Movie Moving Forward

Despite all the 'will it or won't it' talk surrounding the release of the Halo movie, today Variety revealed MS are trying to partner up with Warner and Paramount film studios to get the job done.

Quote:
According to today's Variety, Microsoft is focusing their partnering efforts on Warner Bros. and Paramount, partially due to complex relational issues with the other major studios. Sony is out because of the PlayStation. Disney is iffy due to Apple's Steve Jobs involvement. And New Line is still working through legal problems related to LOTR with Halo producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. The level of interest that Warners and Paramount have shown in the project is unclear.
