First off, I'm a novice at this stuff. That being said, I have a modded xbox that I got from a friend that had xenium on it. When I went in and set it to Instant Boot (I think that's the term - it was not Quickboot), it gives me the "your xbox needs service" screen - no error code though. Nothing else has changed. It was working an hour ago. Now I can't get it to start from the slayer.iso or anything. Did I mortally wound the xbox or is there something I can do to restore it?

Press eject to boot the Xbox into the Xenium OS menu. Try turning quickboot off. Then go to disc tools and make sure your HD is locked, set it to lock if it's unlocked. If that doesn't work, you're still okay. You can FTP your Xbox through the Xenium OS menu. Setup a FTP connection from your Xbox to your PC using this guide: http://www.xtreme-source.com/tutoria...made-easy.html
You can copy the contents of your C and E drive to your PC for backup purposes. Download and extract one of the hacked dashes. Then just FTP the contents of the hacked dash you want to use to the C partition. If it asks you to overwrite files, just click yes to all. You can get the hacked dashes (EvoX, UnleashX, Avalaunch) off Xbins. Upon next reboot, it should boot into the hacked dash if all is well. If that's too much work, just use Slayers to install the hacked dash you want to the C partition, and make sure your HD is locked.

I can't get it to boot at all. I get the standard green xbox startup screen, then the error message. I can't get passed that. I've checked cables and tried just doing it over and over 5-10 times. I have another modded xbox with executer on it if that would help troubleshoot - ie could I trade HD's and eliminate a possible cause?

do you know if this xenium was soldered or using a solderless adapter?

Sorry, I misread your comment. Powering the box on with the eject button got me back into the Xenium OS screen and I corrected everything. It works fine now. Newbie question - why go ahead and lock the hard drive back up?
Thanks for the quick, excellent advice. |

Just to avoid errors, for most things it won't make much difference, there's just no real reason to leave it unlocked, unless you're going to switch out your HD.
