Should I even bother getting Live for the Original Xbox?


I've read a couple of these threads and seen that Xbox is just about useless.
No support from Microsoft.
Feeling sorry for my Original Xbox.

I was thinking, Is it even worth getting for Original Xbox?

The original Xbox is far from useless. A modified Xbox still trumps the 360 and PS3 with ease imo. Thanks to the extensive work of Team XBMC and all the coders in the homebrew community, the original Xbox continues to be an amazing media center and emulator of classic systems. If you plan to mod it, a Xbox is very worthwhile. If not, then I dunno. I believe there are still plenty of people that play Halo and such on XBL. With a modified Xbox and X-Link Kai, you can play online games for free. There aren't nearly as many users as for XBL, but there are people in the free rooms for games like Halo.

Can you give me instructions to what im supposed to do to be able to play online for free. My xbox is modded (via modchip), do u have to register anything online??? Do you just connect the internet cable from a pc to the xbox???

To play online with a modchip, you need to be able disable your modchip. If you try to login to Live through the MS Dash with an active modchip, you will be banned from XBL permanently. To log into Live with a modded Xbox, you need to have a dual boot setup with a softmod or a modchip that is able to be deactivated. Otherwise MS will detect a mod and you will be banned from Live permanently. There are services like Xlink Kai and XBConnect which allow users with modified consoles to play online games for free. The downside is there are not nearly as many users as XBL, but you needn't worry about paying to play or getting banned for having a modded console.

Leaf networks... if you just want to play online with some friends. It's mainly for private games, media sharing between a couple friends and such. It is free and doesn't require a modified console.

You can't play on Live for free. To play on Live, you need to have a subscription.

So, your telling me... i have to subscribe to live, to play online with my xbox? And theres no way I can play for free.

There used to be a way a long time ago to play on Live for free, it had to do with continually cycling trial accounts, it did work from what I read. It was posted a long time ago, not sure where the link is nowadays. That may not work anymore, and it wasn't really "legal" any way. If you want to play Live, it's gonna cost you. Otherwise, Leaf networks is your best option on a non-modded system. I'm not 100% positive Xlink Kai has to be used on a modified Xbox, I've never heard of anyone using it on a non-modded xbox though.
